Aging is a natural process which is impossible to stop completely. However, there are certain steps that we can take to slow down and delay aging and have optimal health for as long as possible. It’s not just about living longer, it’s about living with quality of life, health and the best image possible.
So, here are the best tips to combat aging:
Avoid stress: This may be the main factor that makes us age prematurely. Chronic stress makes our body release certain elements called free radicals that, in large quantities, damage our healthy cells. This damage has been
associated with several diseases that are becoming increasingly common, such as certain types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s. So, the first tip is that we must prevent stress from controlling our lives. To do this, there are relaxation techniques, meditation, breathing, and a myriad of other anti-stress strategies that can be implemented.
Eat well: We have already seen that free radicals are one of the main causes of aging and disease. Another way of keeping these harmful elements at bay is to eat foods that are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that counteract and neutralize free radicals. Some of the best anti-aging foods are dark chocolate (good news for chocolate lovers!), tea and coffee (in moderation), fruits and vegetables (such as kiwis, avocados, watermelon), nuts, the condiments cinnamon and oregano, liver, salmon and beans (especially pinto and red beans).
Exercising and staying active: Exercise and activity has a dual function in anti-aging. On the one hand, it helps to control stress and anxiety (which produce free radicals) and, on the other hand, it tones and strengthens muscles,
joints, and bones! We need to pay close attention to our bones as we get older, as it is normal to gradually lose bone density over the years and hormonal changes like menopause (osteopenia and osteoporosis are silent diseases, but which can be fatal). However, it’s imperative to avoid falls and fractures, as these are a major cause of disability at present.
Last but not least are the following points: Limit alcohol, don’t smoke, monitor and maintain a healthy weight, get enough sleep and have quality sleep, take care of your skin and one thing that I always like to emphasize: think like a young person, with positivity, hope and joy, surround yourself with loved ones, as the saying that we all know – “it is all a question of attitude” – applies perfectly to anti-aging.
