How to Change Your Career at 40

You may be asking yourselves the following questions: Is this even possible? Even if it is, will I be able to do it? Change can be scary, but I am here to help. Half of your life has probably been spent doing one job or staying in your comfort zone. Experience, education, and family may be holding you back from reaching your dreams. Whatever your dream is, go after it!

Now think about who you are at 40. If changing your career is a true passion of yours, ask yourself if it is a possibility. If you play your cards right, then you will be successful. Do not worry, as you are not alone! In Europe, 12% of university students are 25 years or older. In comparison, students over the age of 25 in the US have increased by 41% from 2000 to 2011. These students make up 1 out of 4 students. Age is nothing but a number!

Excuses: “I am too old” or “ People will judge me”. I have heard these before, and I am sure you have said these to yourself a few times too. These excuses reflect your fears and impede your success. This next part of your life might be difficult but do it confidently. Motivate yourself and keep your head up! You got this!

Use your experience: career choices don’t define us! A career choice when you were a teenager does not define or may not reflect the person you are today. Wisdom and experience come with age, so use these tools for your benefit. The labor, social and people skills you have learned will not be wasted, use these toward the future.

One step at a time: start with small changes or steps. Familial bonds and responsibilities may be a barrier, but you’ve got this! Do whatever works best for you, whether that be going back to school or starting your own company.
